At the Reflex factory we got our first glimpse of the new model, sitting snugly amongst its bigger siblings and taking many of its styling cues from them. However, in that sleek company, it looked a little dumpy sitting on its trailer, despite its curves and stylish sheerline. But one peek inside convinced me that there was a lot of useable space packed into just 4.85m waterline length. In the water the new Chianti looks better balanced; its broad beam carried well forward is less noticeable - until you step aboard, that is. Reflex has maximised the amount of cockpit space in the boat by building a short cuddy cabin, carrying the beam a long way forward and positioning the seats and helm close to the bow. This arrangement means that the cockpit is huge, particularly for a small boat. Reflex has further accentuated the 485's space by keeping the seating arrangement simple. It's ingenious, though. Two moulded seat boxes with hinged, padded lids accommodate two people and there is a third free-standing seat box for another person. Velcro strips stop it sliding around on the marine carpet of the deck and it can be positioned anywhere you like. Two transom seats with removable squabs complete the seating. The ingenious bit is the way the third seat box slots between the two fixed seats, keying into moulded slots provided, to produce a full width bench seat - great for fishing or when boating with kids. Alternatively, roto-moulded bucket seats are available or stainless steel seat backs can be added to the box seats. We launched the Chianti 485 at Lyttelton and the rugged Banks Peninsula coastline was to be the backdrop for this story. Reflex Boats' Alan Russell, largely responsible for the boat's development, joined me for the morning and PSI- Marine's John Kinder piloted the Reflex Chianti 615 photo boat. The public boat ramp is not the most user-friendly in the country, but at least there was little surge and we launched both boats without incident. The remains of the ill-fated Lyttelton Marina still litter the shoreline: all that remains are the posts and a few finger jetties at one end of the complex. Surprisingly, there are still a few boats tied up there, despite ongoing problems of vessel damage in adverse weather and sea conditions. As a first-time visitor to the area I was interested in Russell's running commentary as we motored down the harbour and out towards the open sea. He pointed out bays and other geographical features as we went and I appreciated not just his considerable knowledge, but also the fact that we could sit and talk while zapping along at 30-plus mph. The box seats were well positioned for me. The slipstream flew over my head when I was driving sitting down, though I wondered whether slightly more rake on the relatively upright windscreen might not improve the over all look of the boat. Standing to drive was also comfortable, though I was exposed to the full blast of the wind in this position. I expected the little Chianti to ride a little bow-down considering its helm position, but with two adults sitting or standing up front and just a single tote tank under the transom, the boat lifted well. responding to trim and feeling light and responsive to the helm. Reflex has achieved this by paying special attention to the strakes. These are substantial and provide lots of lift forward, even though the entry is quite fine. Further aft a complex hull shape features a variable deadrise with concave aft sections, central planing plank and a pronounced gull-wing for stability, particularly at rest. Not only is there plenty of lift to carry the weight of passengers in the bow, the boat rides well for its size. We made good progress, even in the more disturbed water at the harbour entrance where the tide was racing. Landings are soft, there's no squirming in the troughs and the ride was really very good into a steepish head sea. For most of the trip we were able to maintain a steady speed and there was only a short stretch where I stood up to drive. For the rest we were comfortable enough to sit down. The combination of strakes, plenty of flare in the bow, and the by-now distinctive Reflex bulge running right around the boat make it a dry runner. No water found its way inboard and only a few drops splashed onto the windscreen all morning. The only real negative to come out of the boat's layout is a fair amount of hull noise forward where the strakes are working hard, but Reflex has some ideas on how to deaden it to be less intrusive in subsequent Chiantis. Even though conditions outside were good enough to have travelled all the way to Akaroa, something we were understandably quite keen to do, we didn't really have enough fuel on board to safely make the round trip. The 75hp Mercury gives good fuel economy, as well as brisk performance on this boat, but with just one tote tank and a small reserve, we felt it prudent to limit our mileage. The 485 is available with a Mercury underfloor tank holding around 75 litres, but fitting it is at the expense of a useful underfloor locker in the cockpit. Two tote tanks slot neatly under the transom, sliding all the way back into the portafino section so there's still room for fish bins or other gear back there. The battery and oil reservoir are also here. Neat vinyl curtains keep any spray off and look tidy. Generous beam and the short cuddy have resulted in lots of cockpit space. It's All useable as the boat is surprisingly stable. The floor is covered with washable marine carpet that can be easily removed for cleaning. Side pockets are short, though there is rod storage on one side with push-through rubber grommets so rod tips fit between the boat's side and the cabin liner. A nice touch is toe room all round, something many boats still don't provide. Coaming height is about right for me and teak inserts add a touch of class. The cuddy has no carpeting, though this may change, but the sides are lined and the short seats fabric-upholstered. Realistically there is room in the cuddy to seat two adults or more than two children, but it will probably be more useful to store gear. The screen and forward hatch arrangement is unusual, but works well. The centre panel of the windscreen is hinged. In the closed position it rests on the large, smoke-tinted acrylic hatch locking it down. To work the groundtackle, it's a simple matter of folding back the screen, opening the hatch and walking through. Access to the bow is excellent, and because the hatch runs so far forward, Reflex has been able to keep the anchor locker inside the boat. The dash has moulded flats to take instruments; theres plenty of space for electronics, and there's a moulded binnacle for the compass. The sun threatened to break through all morning but the cloud cover hung on stubbornly. We explored a cave large enough to fit both boats inside and did our best to photograph the 485. The coastal scenery is quite spectacular and the cave is certainly worth a visit if you're boating in the area. With the swell pumping a decent surge through and a right-angle turn halfway in, the first run into the cave was undertaken rather gingerly on my part. Once we got over our initial fear, we did several runs. It was a lot of fun and there's a surprising amount of room inside. Still looking for a different type of shot and hoping the elusive yellow orb would show its face, we headed back up the coast, across the mouth of Lyttelton Harbour, to Taylor's Mistake. Once again, Russell filled me in on the history explaining that the bay was named after a certain Captain Taylor who had an unfortunate accident in the early years of settlement. Mistaking the bay for the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour, he sailed his ship onto it, becoming the laughing stock of the local community. Taylor's Mistake has become a popular weekend destination for fisherpeople, walkers and weekenders. It features numerous baches, or cribs as they are known in the south, some actually built into the caves that pockmark the volcanic cliffs. Our time on the water ran out before the fickle sun decided to co-operate. Sun or no sun, we had to go. On the run back up the harbour we tried playing around with the trim, tucking the engine all the way in while travelling at speed to see if the boat would misbehave. It didn't, though the steering became so heavy the wheel was almost impossible to turn and we scrubbed at least 10mph off the speed. At the other extreme we trimmed the motor well out, buried the throttle and spun the engine to just under 6000 rpm, reaching around 40mph on the Mercury speedo. We were turning a 17in propeller and I felt the boat was a little under-propped. On its previous outing a 20in propeller had been fitted, which gave the 485 a top speed of more than 40mph at 5500rpm. The 20-incher is probably the right choice for this boat. Back at the ramp Russell drove the Chianti back onto its multi-roller Mudgway trailer. All up, the whole rig weighs 950kg with the 75lip engine, slightly less with a smaller donkey, so it is not a major to tow. Reflex has ensured the baby of the family is attractively presented, with dive ladder, ski-pole and two rod-holders to cover all the recreational bases. The boat meets CPC requirements.
